Why Azelaic Acid is BANNED in Malaysia

What is Azelaic Acid?

Azelaic acid is a dicarboxylic acid found in wheat, rye and barley that can help treat acne, hyperpigmentation and rosacea. It is also an anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties. Other benefits include that it can gently exfoliate, unclog pores, prevent future outbreaks and can help even/lighten discolouration.

Why is it banned?

Azelaic acid in cosmetic products is strictly prohibited in Malaysia as the Ministry of Health of Malaysia (Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia) has deemed its distribution as an offence under the Control of Drugs and Cosmetics Regulations 1984 as it has yet to be registered with the Drug Control Authority. This is due to the unsupervised use of preparations containing azelaic acid can cause burning, stinging, peeling, blistering, flaking and reddening of the skin. Products containing azelaic acid can only be used under the supervision of healthcare professionals, thus you cannot just simply buy it online or at a physical retailer, it must be prescribed to you.

Good news we have alternatives for you!

To help with hyperpigmentation:

Hyperpigmentation occurs when areas of your skin become darker in color than the normal surrounding skin. This is due to an excess of melanin forming deposits in the skin. If you suffer from hyperpigmentation, the skincare focus should be to lighten and brighten the skin as well as accelerate skin cell turnover.

To help with rosacea:

Rosacea is a medical condition that causes redness, visible blood vessels in your face as well as small, red, pus-filled bumps. These symptoms may flare up for weeks to months and then go away for a while before returning. If you suffer from rosacea, the skincare focus should be to reduce redness, calming inflammation, and repairing your moisture barrier.

To treat acne:

Acne occurs when the hair follicles become clogged with oil, dirt, dead skin cells, residual makeup and others. If the clogged pore becomes infected with bacteria, it forms a pimple which can then increase and spread. If you suffer from acne, the skincare focus should be to reduce excess sebum and bacteria as well as mild exfoliation to ensure your skin is clean and free of oil and other impurities.
