What is Azelaic Acid?

What is Azelaic Acid?

Azelaic acid, which is often extracted from grains such as wheat or barley, is a gentle exfoliating acid that helps to reduce clogged pores and to improve skin tone and texture. It is especially effective in reducing redness and can be beneficial for those with rosacea or acne.

How does it work?

Azelaic acid works in a various number of different ways. Firstly, it helps to destroy melanocytes (skin cells that produce melanin which causes post-blemish marks and brown spots). It also has anti-bacterial properties that clear pores from bacteria, decrease keratin production (a protein that can obstruct pores), and also decrease inflammation so breakouts look less angry and irritated. Finally, it encourages skin cell turnover, which reduces scarring and helps skin to heal faster.

Why should I use it?

Azelaic acid should be introduced into your routine to manage pigmentation issues such as post-acne pigmentation and melasma, or to calm inflammation if you have active breakouts, rosacea, or acne.

Don't forget to checkout Fitton A's "Azelaic acid. A review of its pharmacological properties and therapeutic efficacy in acne and hyperpigmentary skin disorders." and Nazzaro-Porro's "Azelaic Acid" for more in-depth analysis and we have used them as references.

This product is a light gel texture which is suitable for all skin types and layers. It is an easy accessible alternative to prescription products that are hard to source because it is a low (10%) azelaic acid concentration. It works wonders for reducing the inflammation associated with acne and rosacea as well as improving visible imperfections such as uneven skin tone and texture.
