What you need to know about almonds
Almond extract or oil is rich in vitamin D, E and various other minerals that can calm the skin and enhance the skin’s moisture barrier against environmental damage. There are 2 variations of almond oil, sweet and bitter almond oil, with sweet almond oil advised being better suited to be used on the face.
Sweet almond oil contains;
- Vitamin A = With retinol derived from vitamin A, it stimulates the cell turnover and smoothes fine lines.
- Vitamin E = Rich in anti-oxidant properties, it can treat and prevent cell damage caused by UV or free-radicals.
- Omega-3 fatty acids = Helps prevent premature ageing.
- Zinc = Helps to heal scarring from acne or other factors.
How does Almond Extract/Oil benefit our skin?
Soothe and calm irritation
- Almond extract contains anti-inflammatory and immunity-boosting properties and antioxidants that is a form of environmental protector. Mainly protecting against and reversing the effects of UV damage.
- Recommended for acne prone skin as it reduces the redness caused by breakouts.
Boost hydration
- Restores the skin’s moisture barrier that makes it harder for moisture to be lost throughout the day. In doing so, the skin stays hydrated and reveals a dewy glow.
- Almond oil can help revitalise dull and tired looking skin due to its softening properties. By strengthening the moisture barrier and rejuvenating skin cells, the skin will appear brighter with a more even skin complexion.
- Skin conditions such as eczema, dermatitis and extremely dry skin can find relief as almond oil relieves concerns of itching and cracked skin.
Lessen scarring
- Almond oil helps reduce the appearance of scars and stretch marks by softening the skin to prevent future stretching due to almond oil containing vitamin E.
Things to note
Although there are no prevalent side effects of almond oil/extract, those with a nut allergy should be wary and conduct a patch test prior to incorporating them into your skincare routine.
