Miracle of Ginseng in Skincare

What is Ginseng?

Ginseng is a type of slow-growing perennial plant that belongs to the genus Panax in the family Araliaceae. The plant is also called Ginnsuu in some regions of China and other parts of Asia. The term Ginseng is derived from the Chinese rénshēn, where rén means “person” and shēn means “plant root”. This Chinese term refers to the characteristic forked shape of the plant’s root, which resembles a person’s pair of legs.

Ginseng is mainly found in North America and in the Northern Hemisphere of eastern Asia in areas such as Korea, Bhutan and eastern Siberia. The southernmost Ginseng known to exist was found in Vietnam and is called “Panax vietnamensis”. Ginseng typically possesses compounds known as ginsenosides. There are various types and species of ginseng including Panax ginseng (Asian ginseng) and Panax quinquefolius (American ginseng). The true ginseng plants are those that belong to the Panax genus.

Ginseng roots are usually sold in the dried form as a traditional medicine that is thought to provide various benefits as an aphrodisiac, stimulant and antidiabetic agent, as well as a treatment for sexual dysfunction in males. Ginseng may also be added to energy drinks, herbal teas, hair tonics and skincare products.

When used on the skin, ginseng can act as a cure-all remedy. Regardless of what skin-related issue you are facing, ginseng may be able to help. Ginseng’s roots in beauty are based on legends, but modern research backs up some of the claims. These include:

Wrinkles and signs of aging. Wrinkles are often one of the first noticeable signs of aging. There’s some research to suggest using products with ginseng may help slow the process. A study (2017) of 21 Korean women ages 30 to 65 with crow’s feet wrinkles indicated that using products containing Panax ginseng and Crataegus pinnatifida, a Chinese fruit, helped inhibit wrinkle formation and increase the skin’s moisture. Another study in 2017 suggested that the use of black fermented ginseng has anti-wrinkle effects, and a review from the same year suggested ginseng may slow aging in skin.

Elasticity and Collagen Production. Collagen loss begins in your 20s and 30s, though you don’t always see the effects until later. Expert says ginseng can help slow the loss of collagen, helping the skin retain elasticity. Ginseng root has so many compounds and it includes Vitamin D and B12. All these minerals increased circulation and oxygen and boost in collagen production in your skin dermis.

Puffiness and Inflammation. Puffiness or inflammation is often a result of poor circulation, which can lead to fluid retention. Congestion from fluid can cause fluid retention. Therefore, by consuming Ginseng that full of vitamins and minerals, it will increase the fluid circulation and oxygen. When everything starts to flow, you don’t have fluid build-up anymore.

Skin Whitening and Brightening. Among of the reasons that caused dark skin include issues with melasma, for instance, discoloration and hyperpigmentation. According to expert, when something inhibits the production of tyrosinase, the skin will become fairer. A study in 2020 suggested that ginseng may do the job. A research involved 23 participants indicated that the skin lightened in participants who used fermented black ginseng cream twice per day for 8 weeks.

Based all of these benefits, it would be a waste if you don’t incorporate ginseng in your skincare routine. These are skincare steps based on dermatologist recommendation that you might want to follow: Cleanser, exfoliate, mask, toner, serum, moisturizer, sunscreen.

Ginseng is in multiple beauty products it’s beneficial at any stage of your skin care routine. Therefore, you can incorporate ginseng in any one of these skincare steps or products. Our dermatologist recommended to pick a product that you use a lot such as toner or moisturizer with ginseng to help you get healthier skin.
