Contrary to popular belief, you cannot open and shut pores like doors- its a MYTH! But, there are some ways in which you can minimise their appearance. Let's start off with a quick science lesson. Pores are the openings to our hair follicles and there are two types, one which releases sebum/oil and the other which releases sweat which is necessary for the maintenance of healthy skin. On the whole, we cannot see our pores, however when they become enlarged due to the buildup of oil, bacteria, dirt and makeup they become visible. This is due to these things weighing down, clogging up and stretching our pores.
Choose water based products
The excess oil in oil-based products can collect on the surface of your skin and block your pores, making them appear larger, especially if you have oily skin.
Cleanse twice a day
Wash in both the AM and the PM, or even more if you have been exercising and sweating a lot. The best way to cleanse is by using lukewarm water and gently massaging your skin with a gentle gel-based cleanser that does not contain alcohol. Cleansing twice a day helps to wash away the oil and dirt that has accumulated in your pores, helping to make them less visible.
Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate!
Those with oily skin should exfoliate once or twice a week to remove debris such as dirt, dead skin cells and excess oil that can clog pores. Try opting for exfoliants containing salicylic acid or mandelic acid if your skin is more sensitive.
Mask up with some clay
Apply a clay mask once a week to help absorb the excess oil on your skin, this will help prevent your pores fro becoming enlarged. Ensure you do not do this on the same day you exfoliate as this may irritate your skin and be counterproductive as your pores will appear larger.
Always removing makeup at night
NEVER sleep in your makeup. This can cause your pores to become blocked due to the buildup of makeup, oil, bacteria and other dirt.
Slap on some sunscreen
Exposure to the sun can dry our your skin and make your pores appear larger. Choose a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30.
Tea tree and charcoal are your new best friends
Tea tree helps to battle blemishes and soak up extra oil. Charcoal helps to attract impurities and extract them out of the pores. This dynamic duo is the best in combatting enlarged pores.
