Vitamin C for Skin Brightening: Apply or Ingest?

For brightening up a dull complexion and erasing sun spots, Vitamin C is the gold standard of ingredients. As such, getting familiar with the powerhouse antioxidant is essential for any strong and healthy skincare strategy.  Vitamin C neutralizes free radical damage and protects the skin against UV light and other environmental aggressors, such as pollution and cigarette smoke. Vitamin C also playing an important role in blocking abnormal production of pigmentation to even skin tone and fade dark spots.

Vitamin C can reduce the appearance of brown spots or other sun damage, promote firmer skin through boosting collagen synthesis, reduce inflammation and irritation, and improve the ability of the skin to heal and fade breakout marks. However, when it comes to skin brightening, people are often confused on which method of getting the benefit of Vitamin C will be the best. Is it by applying or ingesting? Here is how to best utilize this hero ingredient for a brighter, smoother, and plumper complexion according to our dermatologist.

Apply or Ingest?

Vitamin C comes in tablets and soluble drinks if you wish to take them orally. You can get Vitamin C tablets and dissolvable Vitamin C at any drug store. However, to specifically enhance the appearance of your skin this generally means prolonged usage. This is because, Vitamin C that we consume orally eventually enters our bloodstream, which flows to the blood vessels that feed our skin. So if that’s the case, is it even necessary to apply vitamins topically if we are ingesting them through our healthy diets and supplements?

Dr. Ingky says, “To achieve the best levels for skin, it is most advisable to apply Vitamin C to the surface of the skin”. This is because, Vitamin C that is taken orally does benefit our skin but only if there is excess left after it goes to our body fat, muscles and tissues. Besides, at doses of 1 g of Vitamin C, absorption falls to less than 50%, and the rest is excreted in the urine.

Meanwhile, topical Vitamin C directly targets particular skincare issues. Therefore, when it comes to skin brightening, apply Vitamin C topically to achieve optimal benefits.

Best to Apply..

We are lucky because today, there is an increasing awareness among skin professionals about the benefits off topical Vitamin C application. You can easily find Vitamin C serum or cream that you can apply directly to your skin, so it absorbs into your body rather than being ingested. The benefits of topical application of Vitamin C are clear. It is safe to use over a prolonged period and it can target precisely the areas where you want to see changes. No doubt that it absorbs rapidly and penetrates deeply.
