Part 3: Shining The Spotlight On The Underdogs Of The Ordinary!

Reyanna Ng Beauty Expert
Part 3: Shining The Spotlight On The Underdogs Of The Ordinary!

We're back again with a part 3 of introducing the underdogs of The Ordinary. We all know that The Ordinary boast amazing products, with equally amazing formulations at affordable prices, but we feel that not all their products are getting the recognition we believe they deserve. So, we at Threebs have compiled a few  lesser known products that we believe should be worth raving about. Read below to learn more about our hidden gems of Marine Hyaluronics, Chia Seed Oil, Plant-derived Hemi-Squalane and B-Oil.

Quench your skin with Marine Hyaluronics!

the ordinary marine hyaluronics

Our skin can never get enough of moisture and hydration. I mean, there’s no such thing as too much moisture, in fact, it is the lack of moisture and hydration that are usually the root of most skin concerns, such as excessive sebum production, itching, weakened skin barrier and etc. When it comes to The Ordinary, we’re all very familiar with their Hyaluronic Acid + B5 serum that has accumulated somewhat a cult following. But we’re here to introduce to another of The Ordinary hydrating skin-saver; Marine Hyaluronics.

What is Marine Hyaluronics?

Marine Hyaluronics is a serum that brings together marine-derived water reservoirs that work to attract and retain water in the skin, similarly to hyaluronic acid, but has a lighter texture and feel compared to hyaluronic acid. What does it mean water reservoirs? This means that the formula contains an array of various marine-life derived ingredients such as exopolysaccharides from skin friendly marine bacteria, Hawaiian red algae, Glycoproteins from Antartic marine sources, micro-filtered blue-green algae and other amino acids. Use of Marine Hyaluronics can result in moisturized skin and a more supple, plumper looking appearance!

How does Marine Hyaluronics differ from Hyaluronic Acid + B5? The main difference between them is the texture and consistency, Marine Hyaluronics has a more water-like texture compared to the more viscous Hyaluronic Acid + B5. In terms of efficacy and benefits, they don’t differ that much, or at all. They both work to attract and hold on to moisture in the skin, making sure that your skin doesn’t suffer from TEWL (transepidermal water loss).

Why this product?

The Ordinary Marine Hyaluronics is a great alternative to the Hyaluronic Acid + B5. If you find that your skin doesn’t react well to the Hyaluronic Acid + B5 or that your skin isn’t showing much of an effect, you could give Marine Hyaluronics a try! Also, the idea of marine derived ingredients may sounds slightly taunting but don’t worry, all marine derivatives in Marine Hyaluronics are sourced sustainably. Another plus point is that the total percentage of active ingredients in this formula is a stocking 23%! So, you’ll be sure to achieve that hydrated, plumped and supple look with this serum!

Due to the lightweight, water-like consistency of Marine Hyaluronics, this serum is perfect for those who prefer an easily absorbed formula or those with oily/combination skin. Think of it like applying water to your face, that same sensation and after-feeling.

Insight to the product

This serum features an extremely lightweight, water-like texture and feel, it is extremely runny so make sure you use to the dropper on the palms of your hands for easy application. If you drop them on the back of your hand, it will just run off and we don’t want that. There isn’t much of a smell, though this is completely subjective. This serum can be applied AM and PM, as one of the first layers of skincare after your toner. Marine Hyaluronics works well with other products/ingredients, so don’t worry about it conflicting other ingredients.

Some may be curious as to whether or not you can mix Marine Hyaluronics and Hyaluronic Acid + B5, answer is, you can! However, there’s no reason to, we recommend choosing one or the other.

Final Thoughts

We will never say no to more hydration and moisture. Marine Hyaluronics may not be much of a household name like Hyaluronic Acid but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t work as well. Marine Hyaluronics is a great choice for those with oilier skin types and living in humid and hot climates, Malaysia is one of them, as you can guarantee that it won’t feel thick and heavy on the skin. Below we’ve compiled some testimonials from Deciem and our lovely Threebs customers;

love the lightweight feeling.” – RB

I love this product very much! The texture is very light, like water, so you need to apply quickly in the first step. It is absorbed very quickly, leaves no residue, and most importantly does not roll off like H. acid. By the way, I have acne-prone skin, and from it I do not have new rashes.” – KS

This is my favourite hydrator. It is so light-weight, so pleasant to use and it help with acne because of the algae extract. To see the full result, I needed at least two weeks of use every day but it is amazing. I recommend it to anyone, especially during the winter.” – SP

This is my HOLY GRAIL PRODUCT. I've been using this morning and night for about 3 weeks and I am actually blown away at how big of a difference it's made to my skin. I am typically oily so I never considered buying more moisturizing products, but omg, I'm glad I trusted the reviews and went for it. In the morning when I wake up I splash my face with water to remove my eye crusties and serums etc. from the night before, and once I towel-dry my face it literally feels like silk. SILK. It's incredible. I'd love to see this in the 60mL size because I will never, ever stop buying this.” – KN

Chia Seeds aren't just superfoods for your body but skin too!

the ordinary chia seed oil

Facial oils, I love them, we love them! Chia seeds are something we’re all quite familiar about, we know them as a superfood that we add into smoothies, water or on top of our yogurt/smoothie bowls. However, dietary benefits aren’t all there is to chia seeds, as a matter a fact, when used topically it boasts antioxidants and emollient benefits. Therefore, we’re here to introduce to a somewhat less popular facial oil that deserves more recognition; Chia Seed Oil.

What is Chia Seed Oil?

Chia seed oil, aka salvia hispanica seed oil, contains an incredibly high concentration of alpha-linolenic acid (omega 3), linoleic (omega 6), oleic, stearic and palmitic acids, plus multiple vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Chia Seed Oil works to immediately soothe, calm and help nourish the skin for a smoother and more even complexion. Although not a pure antioxidant, Chia Seed Oil possesses antioxidant benefits such as protection against free radicals, environmental threats and oxidative stress damage.

Chia seed oil also contains emollient properties that works to soften the skin and improve the functionality of the skin barrier. Addition to the emollient effects, chia seed oil helps increase skin hydration and prevents TEWL (transepidermal water loss). It can also be used to treat dryness and itchiness associated with sensitive, inflamed or dehydrated skin. Plus, those with oilier skin types can find their skin benefiting from chia seed oil as it decreases TEWL, meaning that the skin will be sufficiently hydrated and won’t signal your skin to produce more oil to make up for lack of moisture that your skin was previously experiencing.

A true multi-tasker, chia seed oil can also be used on the hair to deliver softness, strength and add a sheen for healthier looking hair.

Why this product?

The Ordinary 100% Organic Virgin Chia Seed Oil features sustainably sourced, organic, virgin and cold-pressed chia seed oil. This formulation is water and silicone-free which ensures the stability of the formula. A multi-tasking product, it can be used on the entire body, face and hair. Just add it to your body lotion, moisturizer or use it on its own.

Insights to the product

The Ordinary 100% Organic Virgin Chia Seed Oil features a light-medium oil consistency that will be absorbed into the skin easily, though it may take some time, as with most facial oils. This product is a light yellow colour, this is completely normal and no colourants were added. There is a slight nature-like smell that isn’t too overpowering, then again this is completely subjective.

Chia Seed Oil can be used both in the AM or PM and applied after water-based products. if you find the after feeling to be too heavy, you can try adding a few drops in your moisturizer rather than using it as it is. For the hair, apply a few drops through clean, damp hair whenever you feel like it. Chia seed oil can be used in conjunction with any ingredient/product, but we recommend using it with any Vitamin C treatment to boost the anti-ageing effects.

Final Thoughts

Chia Seed Oil may not be as well-known compared to its facial oil counterparts like Rosehip Seed Oil or Argan Oil but that’s just because not many brands carry them, so it’s not easily accessible. With The Ordinary carrying Chia Seed Oil at an extremely low price RM52! No one should miss out on this skin goodness! Below we’ve compiled a few testimonials from Deciem;

This product is the best product that I’ve tried so far. My hair is softer and stronger and my face....omg the results are insane. My skin got extremely dry throughout summer and this product has brought my skin back to life.” – TP

I use it on my hair to make it soft and shiny. It works better at taming my frizzies better than any hair care product I've used. I have fine hair, so just a little is needed. Did I mention that I love the shine? My hair looks so healthy!” – SC

I love this oil! I always have been afraid of using oil on my skin but since I moved to a very dry area and tried a bunch of moisturizers without feeling my skin hydrated, I decided to give this oil a try based on the great reviews and this was the best decision I have made! This oil is absorbed really quickly into the skin and it didn't cause any acne issues. I love it and I will use it for life. The smell is natural and great!” – MA

I have always had extremely oily skin. As I mature my skin is changing. Still oily but has dry moments. Recently my eyes had contact dermatitis which caused extreme dryness and no moisturizer was effective in restoring that moisture. Not all moisturizer can be applied to the eyes This moisturizer is amazing. It's light. It does have a pickle-ey smell but it is not strong and doesnt linger. The skin around my eyes is finally starting to look youthful again. The dryness and wrinkleness that appeared from the irritation is now disipating. Im getting my eyes back.” – SJ

Plant Derived Hemi-Squalane for supple-loking skin

the ordinary plant-derived hemi squalane

Many aren’t aware that sometimes sagging skin and the decrease of suppleness may not be an indication that you require strong anti-ageing/lifting skincare products or even fillers, instead, it could just be a sign that your skin is dehydrated. Hence, Threebs is here to introduce to you to Hemi-Squalane, what it does and how it can improve the overall skin complexion.

What is Hemi-Squalane?

Hemi-squalane is a non-polar hydrocarbon that is derived from the fermentation of sugar-based feedstock. If you’ve looked through The Ordinary product range, you may have seen both squalane and hemi-squalane. They are both non-comedogenic (does not clog pores) emollients that help with reducing ongoing hydration loss that can result in weakened dermal elasticity and suppleness which can cause the appearance to look haggard. Therefore, why we recommend squalane or hemi-squalane for those concerned with improving overall skin complexion and texture for a more “awake” look.

Well then, what is the difference between squalane and hemi-squalane? Comparing with squalane, hemi-squalane has a lower molecular weight, thus having a much better spreadability which leaves a drier and lighter feel. And due to its lightweight after-feel, hemi-squalane is suitable to be used for hair to help reduce hair frizz.

Why this product?

The Ordinary carries 2 squalane serums, the 100% Plant derived Squalane and this Hemi-Squalane. Like we stated above, the hemi-squalane has a much lightweight and drier after-feel. Hence, people with oilier skin types or living in humid climates may prefer the consistency of the hemi-squalane. This product works to deliver that extra boost of hydration for more supple looking skin. A multi-functional product, the hemi-squalane can be used on all parts of the body, including the hair to help with de-frizz the hair.

100% Plant Derived Hemi-Squalane can be used in conjunction with most, if not all, products and ingredients, so don’t worry if your skincare regime contains direct acids, retinoids or etc.

Insight to the product

100% Plant Derived Hemi-Squalane features a lightweight, non-greasy water-oil consistency that is quickly and easily absorbed into the skin for a drier after-feel. Just think of the consistency to be exactly like water. There isn’t a particular smell to it and is completely transparent, so be careful to not let drip all over. We recommend dispensing the product in the palms of your hand, not the back as it will run all over, and you’ll be wasting more product. 100% Plant Derived Hemi-Squalane can be applied both in the AM and PM, after water-based products and before your moisturizer/oil.

Final thoughts

Like the 100% Plant derived Squalane, we at Threebs highly recommends 100% Plant Derived Hemi-Squalane to anyone and everyone! Regardless of one’s skin concerns, hemi-squalane can fit into your skincare routine and you may like the effects of it because all skin will benefit from added hydration and moisture. With helping to deliver and seal moisture in the skin, you don’t have to worry about suffering from the lack of elasticity and suppleness. Below we’ve added some testimonials from Deciem and our lovely customers at Threebs;

Bought this as a gift for my best friend and she said visible results could be seen after just two weeks!” – SA

Gentle to oily skin ppl” – LX

I have been using this product for months. I have dry, sensitive skin, and I am suffering from stress-related acne. This oil feels amazing, with a silicon-like texture, perfect both for oil clensing (mixed with oil of choice) and for hydration. Plays well under makeup. Doesn’t grease up the face. Love it!” – CB

This stuff is INCREDIBLE for hair. It has an almost water-like consistency so it's really light. I can even use it on my hair after it is dry with no issues. You might look greasy for like 2 minutes, but as soon as it soaks in your hair just looks shiny and soft. Love it!” – CH

B Oil ranks A+ for healthy skin support

the ordinary b oil

Yes, you read it right. The name of this facial oil only has 1 letter, the letter B. However, unlike the usual facial oils, this facial oil actually comprises a blend of various oils, fatty acids and squalane for optimal skin health and protection. If you already haven’t guessed it, the “B” stands for blend. Continue reading to find out what comprises the oil blend and how it works to benefit the skin.

What is B Oil?

B Oil solubilizes a purified form of micro-algae in a blend blend of marula, argan, baobab, pataua, brazil nut, inca inchi, rosehip and borage oil, as well as squalane to support and a healthy skin defense. Other than supporting the overall health of the skin, B Oil also enhances skin radiance, provides antioxidant protection against free radicals and counters skin irritant aggressors. The micro-algae helps with reducing redness and inflammation, while the squalane restores the moisture barrier and improves skin suppleness.

Why this product?

B Oil is a great choice for those looking to target dehydration, soothe irritation, improve uneven skin complexion and wants a facial oil that provides antioxidant support. A plus point to B Oil is that because it is a blend of oils, squalane and micro-algae, it can work to deliver combined effects that other oils can’t. If you’re looking for a facial oil that is more suitable for someone concerned with hydration, rather than anti-ageing/brightening/lifting effects, B Oil is the one for you.

Insight to the product

A characteristic of B Oil is that it imparts a golden-green colour and a slight herbal smell as a result of the high micro-algae concentration. It does not contain any added colourants or fragrance. B Oil can be used by all skin types but whether or not it suits your preference is entirely subjective. B Oil can be used in the AM and PM after water-based products, or even on its own if you prefer. Whether or not a facial oil is to be used after or before your moisturizer or mixed with your moisturizer is entirely up to you. Hence, we recommend trying them out and finding the one that suits your skin the best.

B Oil can be used in conjunction with all products and ingredients, all we advise is conducting a patch test prior because of the blend of ingredients that can cause a reaction.

Final thoughts

Facial oils are a must-have in my skincare regime, it has saved my skin and my wallet as I use less moisturizer than I normally do. B Oil is a true rarity and is only offered and formulated by The Ordinary! The blend of skin-friendly oils, squalane and micro-algae all work synergically together to support your skin health and provide much-needed hydration. Below we’ve added some testimonials from Deciem and our lovely customers at Threebs;

Suitable for my combination skin. Will definitely repurchase” – NA

I love this face oil, it is very rich and hydrating, yet it is absorbed very well so that there is no oily residue. It is usually the last step in my facial routine in the morning or when my face feels dry in between. I actually love the earthy and natural smell and greenish hue, it makes my face glow in a healthy manner.” – SB

Love in a bottle! The smell is a little earthy and it’s definitely greenish yellow, but it feels like heaven on my face. After doing my entire skin routine i put a few drops of this on my face and neck and it absorbs fairly quick for an oil. It doesn’t sit on my face all day and it’s just so relaxing to put on. I love that it’s several oils mixed in so i feel like i’m getting the benefits from all of them. I also love that in the morning my face looks radiant and it’s definitely helped my face become less dehydrated so far. Definitely will continue to use this and recommend to everyone.” – JD
