Hyaluronic acid- a staple in anyone's life with its ability to attract a thousand times its weight in water making it the perfect ingredient for everyone to incorporate into their skincare routine! Hydrating, plumping and reduces the appearance of fine lines, what more could you ask for? Most of us use this miracle ingredient, but are we actually applying it in a way that utilises its full potential?
The process by which HA leaves your skin feeling hydrated is that it absorbs moisture from your external environment into your skin, such as the air around you. Depending on where you reside, the amount of moisture in your surroundings can vary. If HA cannot capture much water from the air around you, it will instead extract the residual moisture from the deeper layers of your skin from your dermis layer of your skin through your epidermis to your skin's surface. Thus this has an adverse effect that results in the opposite of your intentions, resulting in your skin being more dehydrated.
To rectify this, apply HA immediately after stepping out your shower while your bathroom is still steamy, your skin is still damp and your pores are open ready to absorb (of course gently pat your skin dry before application). Then follow up with a moisturiser on top to lock in the HA. Another way is to spritz your face with a facial mist or water, apply HA and then spritz again to seal in the moisture.
