Your Skin And Your Menstrual Phases

We all know that as women we have that one unpleasant period of time that is extremely painful, frustrating and uncomfortable. This time period is called menstruation period or also known as “ that time of the month”. During menstruation, the hormones in the body change and fluctuate causing changes in moods, appetite and of course the skin. At this time, your skin will be extra oily due to the increase in sebum production which will cause acne and blemishes to form. It doesn’t just end there, there are several phases before and after your period that also affects your skin’s condition. Now, let’s talk about the menstrual stages, how it changes the skin and what to do to reduce the impact.

In general, a woman’s body have 2 most impactful hormones which are progesterone and oestrogen and these two hormones level changes according to its cycle. Usually, a woman's menstrual cycle could range from 24-30 days. There are 4 stages of a woman's menstrual cycle. First one is known as the follicular phase which will happen after your period ends and usually range from 7-10 days. During this time, the uterus is preparing to release an egg which causes oestrogen levels to peak and by this time when this hormones peaks, your skin is at the best glowiest state, it promotes collagen production and you barely see any pores. To boost your glow, you can add brightening and anti-aging care to your skincare routine. Oh. and also don’t forget to exfoliate the face to remove the dead skin cells to reveal smooth and bright skin.

Then we have the ovulation phase. This will be on the day 14th after the follicular phase, which  happens around 3-4 days. This time around, the ovaries have released the eggs which will cause you to have oilier skin as the pores have started to become more noticeable, and you may realise some blemishes have started to pop up around your face. To combat oily skin and large pores, a good purifying mask such as a charcoal or clay mask can help clear the oil and gunk out of the pores. Benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid and niacinamide can be useful at this moment too to diminish blemishes and clears out acne. The third one is the luteal phase. This occurs around the 15th to 28th day of your menstrual cycle. During this cycle, the progesterone level in the body increases and PMS symptoms begin such as more oily skin, uneven skin, and possibly dry skin. The way to solve PMS symptoms focus solely on hydration and increasing the antioxidants. At this time, hydration, calming and soothing masks play an important role to combat this issue. Also make sure to increase your water intake and stay hydrated all the time.
