Hello The Ordinary army. We have been getting a lot of questions by our customers why the Caffeine Solution 5% + EGCG they received has black dropper. We are writing this to address the concerns. Rest assured they are completely genuine and kindly allow us the explain.
At the moment, our inventory consist of both white and black dropper/cap. From our DECIEM boxes and outer layer of the individual product packaging, we are unable to tell which is which. However, we will share more information regarding the reading of the LOT number in our upcoming article and this will help you guys to identify more information about the products you purchased. Stay tuned.
So far, we have already been shipping the new black dropper for Caffeine Solution since early August 2020. So what is the black dropper and where have we seen it previously?

The Black Dropper from The Ordinary is a product sold separately on DECIEM's website for USD2. It is an optional dropper to help dispense serum foundations.
Suitable for 30ml Serum Foundation bottles. We believe the offering of this product is due to a lot of faulty dropper and cap from the stock white color ones.
Another possible reason is also that some oil-based product can very easily stain the white dropper rubber at the top, making it look yellowish and disgusting. Anyone who is looking for a replacement might opt for the black color on sold above. So what is going on with Caffeine Solution as the only product by The Ordinary supplied with the black dropper?

This Is Just Temporary

As indicated on DECIEM's website, the Caffeine Solution will be supplied temporarily with a black dropper. We asked DECIEM why, but did not receive a response. Our best guess is most likely a manufacturer's inventory issue. Nonetheless, let's look at the main differences of the black and white dropper below:
1) As we all can see, there are no major differences in the packaging itself.
2) The new Caffeine Solution has a LOT number of TDTC and the older one is printed with TC9. The first letter in the front represents the year it was made. "T" represents the year 2020. So, both of them are manufactured this year.
3) In this image, we can now clearly see the differences where the New (temporary) is supplied with a black dropper. Let's dive deeper shall we?
4) Looking at both of them closely, we can see that New (temporary) actually has a different tip. This is different from what we saw previously on DECIEM website where the black dropper being sold there has similar tip as the white dropper.
We hope all the above information helps. Personally, we like the rounded tip because it is more comfortable when applying on the skin when it touches the face by accident or intentionally.
